Help Lebanon: A Nation in Crisis
Lebanon, a country already grappling with immense challenges, is now facing a humanitarian crisis of devastating proportions. Recent Israeli airstrikes have forced more than 600,000 people to flee their homes, and over 300,000 have left the country in just the last month. With over 70,000 people sheltering in schools and centers, and 900 displacement centers set up, Lebanon is struggling to provide basic needs to those who have been forced from their homes.
The ongoing conflict has led to the tragic loss of 1,540 lives and more than 5,140 injuries since October 8th (according to the Ministry of Public Health). As the crisis intensifies, the displaced, many of whom have lost everything, are in urgent need of shelter, medical care, food, and basic essentials.
A Country Already Under Tremendous Strain
Lebanon has been through a series of traumatic events in recent years, which have severely weakened its infrastructure and economy:
- COVID-19 Pandemic: Like many nations, Lebanon was deeply affected by the pandemic, with the healthcare system strained and the economy devastated by lockdowns and loss of business.
- Economic Collapse: Lebanon has been in the midst of an unprecedented economic crisis, with soaring inflation and devaluation of the local currency. The collapse has left many families unable to afford even basic necessities such as food, medicine, and electricity.
- Beirut Port Explosion (2020): One of the largest non-nuclear explosions in history, the Beirut blast destroyed homes, hospitals, and businesses, killing hundreds and injuring thousands. The recovery efforts continue to this day, but many families are still displaced and living in precarious conditions.
- War and Displacement: The recent escalation of violence has compounded these existing crises. Families who were already struggling now face the unimaginable reality of being displaced once again, with limited access to humanitarian aid and resources.
